Failed Crypto Heist Turns Violent

Bristol Crown Court on Oct. 15 sentenced three men to prison terms ranging from five to six years for an aggravated burglary after they forced their way into a home, assaulted a man, and demanded cryptocurrency.

According to a police report, two of the men, Terroll Paul, 31, and Pierre Madzou, 30, both of Barking, London, were sentenced to six years and five-and-a-half years in prison, respectively. The third, Mohamed Samagassi, 37, of no fixed address, received a five-year sentence. All three men pleaded guilty in August to charges of aggravated burglary.

The police said the trio broke into the victim’s Bristol home in the early hours of May 15 in a failed attempt to steal digital currency. During the attack, the victim was struck over the head, sustaining a substantial injury that required hospital treatment. The suspects were arrested at the scene after the victim’s teenage sister alerted police.

The sentencing comes amid a concerning surge in violent U.K. robberies targeting individuals believed to hold significant wealth in cryptocurrency. In one recent case, assailants targeted an unidentified businessman and his pregnant wife in their home. In September, another British court heard evidence detailed against a cybercriminal who orchestrated a series of violent home invasions across the country, attempting to extort millions of dollars in cryptocurrency from high-net-worth holders.

Impact on the Victim and Police Praise

Meanwhile, in a victim personal statement read during the sentencing hearing, the unnamed victim said the attack drastically changed his demeanor and left him constantly frightened.

“Before, I was bubbly, talkative, and outgoing, but now I would describe myself as tense and apprehensive,” the victim said.

PC Gemma Childs, the investigating officer, praised the resilience of both the victim and his younger sister.

“The victim’s younger sister has also shown extreme bravery, with her actions leading directly to the apprehension of the offenders and preventing her brother from further harm,” Childs said. “This is something that no one should have to go through in their lives, especially not a child, and her quick thinking in this situation is nothing short of remarkable.”
